SELENE

About Us

Team Selene is the first Google Lunar XPRIZE team from China. The team is led by Markus Bindhammer, a German-born inventor who lives in Shanghai. Bindhammer’s goal is to create a team of young and motivated Chinese students or graduates in mathematics, physics and aerospace engineering. The team’s strategy is to create a rover based around the idea of a rocket-car, which they will name LuRoCa 1 (Lunar Rocket Car 1). They are exploring the possibility of launching with SpaceX, but will also look into opportunities with Chinese launch providers.

Team leader Markus Bindhammer was born in a small town named Gunzenhausen in Bavaria, Germany. His father was a chemistry and biology grammar school teacher, which is where Bindhammer acquired his love of science. His first experience with a rocket was at age 10, when he built one from cardboard and gun powder. According to Bindhammer, this contraption destroyed his neighbor’s roses, and here he is, 27 years later, ready to make another rocket. At university, he studied mathematics, and began to explore electronics and robots.

Shi Xiaojun was born 1974 in the middle of northwest China. Already as a child he was very interested in technique, nature and cosmos. After he graduated from Huabei Hydropower University with a Bachelor degree and machine engineering as major, he works many years as an engineer in the tools and machinery business. He became a professional in construction of complex machines and working with programs like Solidworks, Rhino, Photoshop, AutoCAD and Illustrator.

Today he is the chief engineer of a well known machinery company in Shanghai.
