Lunar Roundup: Air Miles
The teams got in a lot of travel this week, from Mars and the Moon to medieval castles.
Around the world...and Mars? Your interplanetary competition highlights from April 16th-April 22nd...
Mars. The Moon. Medieval castles. Virginia Tech. The teams got in a ton of air miles this week, travelling all over the world for cool conferences and other work. This competition is not just global---it's multiglobal (including the Moon & Mars), so the teams get around to all kinds of crazy places! Here's the lowdown on all the latest travel (and other fun stories) from this week:
Starting off with a small jump, Astrobotic ranged out to Virginia Tech to show off a day in the life of the lab there---and the awesome results! (A test helicopter in flight action!:)
These helicopters help simulate Moon gravity maneuvers (so they can test guidance systems and other tech).
Mars by Utah
Russian team Selenokhod---who have been quiet for a while---have gone to the Mars Desert Research Station! This is a simulated Mars-base environment in Utah where the team will lock themselves in and live the Martian life for a few weeks:
They’re actually in the station now, and will be out on May 4th. Wave to Mars (or...Utah...) for them!

Summit in Santiago
The teams recovered enough from the awesomeness of our annual Team Summit in Chile to post some cool videos from the floor.
SpaceIL gave a firsthand tour of the scene at the Grand Hyatt...
...while also posting their complete presentation from Day 2:
Team Angelicvm had one of their members occupy a medieval castle (well, O.K., he might have been just visiting) in Poland for a conference:
And for a Germanic flavor, Part Time Scientists hit the Hannover Messe industrial conference to check out a bunch of exciting new tech (from a very "I, Robot" android to 3D printing and Mars Curiosity):
- Omega Envoy picked up a project management software sponsorship from Wrike!
- Astrobotic posted a pair of technical cornucopias (clamping, robotic recharging) on their Tyrobot moon-cave explorer!
I’ll be rounding these up every week, so keep an eye here for the best developments from our very own moon race.
And if you have any favorite stories from the week that didn’t make it in here---share them below!
